Radiology Department

The department has an imaging technologist with a Bachelor’s degree in medical imaging and has a six years’ experience in the section.
This is part of the diagnostic section of medicine which comprises of:

  • Ultra Sound (2D Doppler sonoscope)
  • X-ray

Ultra sound

It is a 2d – Doppler, 3 probes and superficial curvilinear, endovagina / endorectal probes

Activities

  • Production and brief interpretation of diagnostic X-ray films.
  • Advice to clinicians on specific investigation required by specific patients
  • Carry out real-time ultra sound diagnosis / investigations
  • Counsel patients on their diagnostic outcomes

Working hours

The department operates 7 days from 8:00am to 5:00pm. however a radiographer is always called in case of any emergency irrespective of the time of the day.

Investigations done

  • All plain X-ray investigations like Chest X-ray (CXR), skull, musculoskeletal, Peripheral Nervous System (PNS), lumber thoracic and cervical vertebrae X-ray etc.
  • Some special radiographic investigations like Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP), all barium studies and Hysterosalpingogram (HSG).
  • Obstetrics ultrasound, abdominal ultra sound, scrotal, breast, pelvic Ultra sound and musculoskeletal ultrasound.

Achievements

  • So far this is the best diagnostic department in the greater Kibaale region thus receives a big number of referral patients every day.
  • In November 2018, acquired a modern Ultra sound scan machine sonoscope S 1:1 with all the advanced sonographic software and with excellent resolution.
  • The department shifted to green sensitive film which has a faster speed and thus better resolution in X-ray images, and this reduces the dosage to patients.
  • Our client turnover has grown from a total of approximately 1500 in 2016 to approximately 2400 in 2018.

Future Plan

The department hopes to acquire

  • A digital X-ray with CR technology,
  • A CT Scan to serve the entire mid-western region of Uganda
  • To incorporate teloradiology in our system and make use of the scarce radiologist in the country.
